Construction accidents often lead to safety violation citations

Employers in California and throughout the United States must comply with all applicable safety standards and laws governing such matters in the workplace. Proper training for employees, well-maintained equipment and regular inspection of worksites are all part of a process when it comes to keeping workers as safe as possible on the job. Construction accidents still occur, however, and the results can be devastating.

If the Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigates a particular incident, it may issue citations against one or more companies when safety violations are present. Often, hefty fines are assessed, particularly when an incident resulted in a worker suffering serious injuries or death. In fact, two companies in another state were recently fined after a worker was hurt on the job.

The man was working on a building expansion project at the time. He is said to have fallen through a hole on the floor, plummeting two stories to the ground. His direct employer, as well as the company that was serving as general contractor on the job were cited for not covering the hole, and were fined. The general contractor has contested the citation.

OSHA found a third company that was also working on the same site to be in compliance with all safety regulations. Injured workers and their families often rely on workers' compensation benefits to make ends meet after serious construction accidents occur. If an insurance company attempts to deny a claim, or there are other complications in the process, it can add undue stress to an already difficult situation. For California workers, an experienced workers' comp attorney can help overcome any obstacles that arise.
