Farmers at high risk for workplace accidents

Many California workers earn their livings on farms. They, and other employees whose work is considered dangerous, are often at high risk for workplace accidents. To maintain safety on the job, employers are obligated to provide appropriate training, as well as arrange equipment inspections and maintenance on a regular basis.

Farming typically involves heavy equipment, large vehicles and situations prone to safety risks. Farm accidents often result in serious injuries or death to workers. In recent years, there have been several reports of farmers suffocating to death after falling into grain bins, as well as others who suffered permanent damage to appendages after getting caught in farm machinery.

Recently, another farm tragedy occurred. The incident resulted in the death of one man and severe injury to another. It appears both men were repairing a tractor that accidentally kicked into gear and rolled over them.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to a nearby hospital, then later was transferred to another facility for treatment of his injuries. Serious workplace accidents often lead to lengthy recoveries. Often, workers are unable to return to their duties during such time and may need guidance as they navigate the workers' compensation system to claim benefits that can cover their medical expenses and replace lost wages as they recuperate. More than one worker in California has faced stressful situations where employers or insurance agencies have attempted to deny their claims; this is another good reason for hiring experienced legal representation before filing a workers' comp claim.
