What to expect following serious workplace accidents

Some jobs are obviously more dangerous than others. All California employees (as well as those in other states) have a right to reasonably expect employers to protect their safety on the job, even when the workplace is a river barge. Workplace accidents caused by substandard safety precautions are a major concern in some areas. A recent incident occurred in another state that injured two workers.

Both men were working on a floating platform at the time. It appears that an inflatable plug somehow became dislodged from a floating pipe. The plug struck the two workers, causing severe injuries to both.

One of the injured workers was transported to land by a private vessel. It was some time before the other man was extricated from the barge. A fire and rescue boat finally arrived at the scene and took the man to shore. Both were transported to a hospital and both were listed in serious condition. As is typical in such situations, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident; the agency has six months to complete its query.

The company for which the two men worked has apparently been reported to OSHA in the past regarding safety concerns. California workplace accidents resulting in serious injuries often lead to long, difficult recoveries. During that time, it is common for injured workers to file workers' compensation claims to collect benefits that can cover medical costs and replace lost wages. If an employer or insurance agency attempts to deny a claim, a worker may seek immediate assistance from an experienced attorney to rectify the issue.
