Workplace accidents: Crane tips over onto boom truck, injures 1

Construction vehicles can pose severe injury hazards if they are not positioned securely. California employers must safeguard against workplace accidents by ensuring that hazard assessments are carried out by qualified individuals before equipment such as cranes are used. Operating heavy equipment that is standing on loose ground or an uneven surface can be life-threatening to the operators and any workers in the vicinity.

The California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration reported that it was called to the scene of an incident in Oxnard on a recent Monday morning. Officials said a power pole had to be lifted into the yard of a private residence. To achieve this, a boom truck and a crane were used.

For reasons yet to be determined, the crane tipped over and smashed into the boom truck's arm. This caused the bucket of the boom truck to swing. Fortunately, the worker who was in the bucket was properly secured by his lanyard and fall harness, so he did not fall out of the bucket.

However, he suffered serious head injuries and was transported to a medical facility. He will likely be unable to return to work immediately, and he will surely face unanticipated medical expenses. Fortunately, financial relief may be pursued through the California workers' compensation insurance system. Victims of workplace accidents may file benefits claims for payment of medical expenses along with lost income. Wage replacement is awarded to those whose injuries cause absences from work, and it is typically based on the victim's average weekly wage.
